There’s something special about handmade artifacts. A timeless feeling that we like to call essence, that connects you to the process of each design in a way that gives you more respect and empathy for the materials used, the process and the artisans.
Our Story
Andean Essence was founded in 2001 in Seattle, Washington by Jose Conejo, a Kichwa native from Ecuador. Andean Essence was founded to promote representation of the Kichwa indigenous community and bring a little bit of the world to its customers. Started selling a few artifacts under the Seattle Alaskan viaduct to street and county fairs in the Northwest. Along the way Andean Essence added more products from different parts of the world.
Andean Essence now has over thousands of returning and new customers due to the quality of artifacts and its excellent customer service. Above all Andean Essence has a growing community who it shares its love for handmade quality artifacts with and the stories they tell about those who create them.

Jose Conejo
FOUNDER
Meet our founder, Jose - a self-made entrepreneur with a passion for creativity. He has extensive experience in commerce, watercolor art, and jewelry design, and is known for his artistic skills. With five successful art exhibits under his belt, including one in which he was interviewed by Seattle's local Univision channel, Jose's artistry is well-respected.
Driven by his love of art and creativity, Jose takes pride in providing the best customer experience in his role as founder. He is committed to making a positive impact on the industry and ensuring that his passion for art is reflected in everything the company does.
When not leading the company, Jose enjoys spending time with his family, reading, and napping.

Saiwa Conejo
PROJECT MANAGER
Meet Saiwa, a highly driven technical and creative team member with a background in Project Management, DEI, and web development tools. She earned her B.A. in Environmental Studies and an M.A. in Policy Studies from the University of Washington, where she won Outstanding Program of the Year award.
Saiwa brings her planning skills and creative vision to Andean Essence, where she takes pride in making e-commerce accessible to everyone and building the business’s brand. Her passion for entrepreneurship and creativity is evident in her work, as she strives to make a positive impact on the industry.
When not working, Saiwa enjoys spending time with her loved ones and running.
